Dear Families,
Last week’s hurricane brought a great deal of destruction, interruption to the lives of many in our area, and even loss. 7 days after the storm arrived, we are all trying to move forward and not look back. I hope that disruptions were limited to a few hours (or even days) without the conveniences of electricity and perhaps a wait in one of the infamously long gas lines that have plagued the tri-state area. An overwhelming majority of the children came to school eager to talk and share their experiences from the past week. Some were more reserved, but everyone had something to say and all were encouraged to share their thoughts and experiences with their classmates and with me.
Please use homework time this week to settle back into routines and continuing to spend meaningful time together. The word of the month for November is gratitude-a feeling of thankfulness or appreciation. Let Hurricane Sandy be a reminder to us all to enjoy the many gifts that we have become accustomed to (such as indoor lighting, heat, and hot water) and recognize just how fortunate and rich our lives are, regardless of the material objects that we possess…or lost.
Some notes:
- Tomorrow (Tuesday) was originally scheduled to be a half day conference day. It is now a full day of school.
- Our trip to Philipsburg Manor has been cancelled and is being rescheduled. I will notify you when a new date has been determined.
- If you have a photograph of your child dressed in his/her Halloween costume, please email it to me and I will share it with the class.
- The specials for this week are: Monday-Art, Tuesday-P.E., Wednesday-Music, Thursday-P.E., and Friday-Art.
- The Lend a Hand Coat Drive has been rescheduled. Drop off will be at the back entrance at WOS on Friday 11/9 from 8-5, Saturday 11/10 from 8:45-10:45, and Tuesday 11/13 from 8-5. Distribution will be at WOS on 11/13 from 6:30-7:30. Non-perishable food, jeans, sneakers, and backpacks with school supplies are also being collected .
Please let me know if you or immediate family members are currently displaced due to the storm, experienced any significant damage or have any questions. Last week was a frightening one for many. With Thanksgiving just a few weeks away, we again are reminded of the many people, places, and things that we have in our lives to be grateful for.
Stay warm!
Sincerely,
Randi Nerkizian
