Dear Families,

Welcome to first grade!  If you have older children, you already have a sense of the incredible social, academic, and physical growth that this year will behold.  First grade is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning.  This is a year of important social and academic transitions.  If this is your first time having a child in first grade, you will be amazed!  I wanted to take a few moments to let you know about our first day of school together.

The first day flew by!  We had a great day together and I am excited to get to know the children better in the coming days and weeks.  Today we read My First Day of School by P.K. Hallinan. We also practiced turning and talking to a partner and learned about each other.  The children worked on a few tasks to get learn their classmates’ names, including participating in a game called “That’s Me!”  With some positive thinking and a few squeezes of the hand, they were even able to make their magic play dough change color…a sure sign of a great year ahead!  We will be settling into our normal routines and schedule over the next few days.

The specials schedule rotates on a 6 day cycle which is listed below.  I will always try to include the daily special in the weekly homework packet so that you can make sure that your child is properly dressed and prepared.  The schedule is as follows:

Day 1-P.E.

Day 2-Music

Day 3-P.E.

Day 4-Art/Book exchange (4A)

Day 5- P.E.

Day 6- Art/Library (6B)

If you have not sent in school supplies yet, please do so as soon as possible.  Also, please provide a small healthy snack for your child each day.  The children do not eat lunch until 1:15 so it is important that they come with a nutritious snack.  Please send your child’s snack to school separate from their lunch.  They will be stored in the children’s cubbies to allow for easy access.  Feel free to send your child to school with a refillable water bottle for him/her to keep at her seat.  We will discuss all of these items and more in greater detail at Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday.

If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me or call me at school.  I will get back to you as soon as possible.  If you prefer to receive emails at a different address, please let me know.  Likewise, if you would prefer to be removed from the class email notifications, kindly contact me and I will make any necessary changes.

I’m sure that we will have an adventurous, fun-filled, and successful year in first grade.  Thank you for sharing your child with me!

Sincerely,

Randi Nerkizian
