Today is Dr. Seuss' birthday.  Dr. Seuss is one of America's most popular and successful children's book author/illustrators, having published 46 in all.  The National Education Association implemented Read Across America day in 1997.  "Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss."

To celebrate Dr. Seuss and our love for reading, the children decided to have a birthday party in his honor.  They began by planning and brainstorming about all of the necessities to throw a party:

Theme: Dr. Seuss

Purpose: to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday because he wrote so many great books for kids to read and enjoy

Guest list: kids in the class, Mrs. Polansky, Ms. Carr, Mrs. Bandura, Mrs. Edler, Mrs. McCahill

Food: snacks from home (but Dr. Seuss treats or birthday cake might be nice, too)

Activities (our ideas): draw characters from Dr. Seuss books (like Thing 1 and Thing 2); make up your own creature using the information we know about Dr. Seuss; bring in Dr. Seuss books from home; Pin the hat on the cat; a craft; write a birthday card to Dr. Seuss; write your own Dr. Seuss story

Decorations: balloons, party hats, Dr. Seuss themed pictures

This morning we talked a little bit about Dr. Seuss.  We learned that his real name is Theodor Geisel.  His name, Dr. Seuss, comes from his middle name which was also his mother's name before she got married.  Ms. Stern discovered that his name rhymes with voice and not loose.

read a few more Dr. Seuss stories and then got to work on the decorations.  We proudly hung them around the room to enjoy.  Next, everyone had a chance to read Dr. Seuss books by themselves or with a partner.  After that, we were treated to a Reader's Theater rendition of dr seuss green eggs and ham reader's theater by two of our classmates.  Even though they were nervous, everyone thought they did a wonderful job!
