About Regents Earth Science:
Regents Earth Science is a high school level course that upon passing the state examination in June will provide one high school credit. Work is assigned every night. Assignments are checked the following day at the beginning of class and students are held responsible and accountable for their work as would any other high school course while keeping in context that students are still in a middle school setting.
Students are responsible for their work and are required to maintain an appropriate grade point average for the course. A recommendation to guidance will be made to switch students who are unable to maintain the appropriate grade point average into a regular on level general science course. A recommendation to guidance for a course switch will also be made if a student fails two consecutive unit exams, falls below an 85% quarter average, or owes excessive labs. Students are also expected to maintain a minimum testing average of 85%, which demonstrates mastery of content for the unit.
The NYS exam has questions that require the students to read and follow directions on their own. It’s critical that students learn to think independently. Our objective is to structure our lessons and activities to help students achieve in this area.
Regents Earth Science Curriculum
The Regents Earth Science curriculum is based on the core-curriculum of Intermediate Level Science as outlined by the NYS Department of Education. You can view this site at http://www.nysed.gov. The curriculum is designed chronologically so that one unit provides the necessary information for the following units:
Prologue Unit
· What is Earth Science?
· Types of Graphs
· Density
· Percent Error
· Observations & Inferences
UNIT 1: Planet Earth
UNIT 2: Astronomy
UNIT 3A/B: Weather and Climate
UNIT 4: Rocks and Minerals
UNIT 5: Interpreting Earth’s History
UNIT 6: The Dynamic Crust
UNIT 7: Weathering, Erosion, Deposition, and Landscapes (includes water cycle)
Grading Policy:
Tests – 50%
Quizzes – 15%
Homework – 10%
Projects/Labs – 25%
*Year’s Average: Quarters 1-4 – 22.5% each and Regents Exam – 10%
Homework Policy:
Homework will be assigned regularly. All homework must be turned in on the day it is due. Late assignments will NOT be accepted. HW turned in on time = 10 points.
Tests and Quizzes:
A test will be given at the conclusion of each unit. Larger units may be broken down into a mid-unit exam and an end unit exam. Smaller units may be combined into one unit test. Tests are always announced on the weekly outline with at LEAST one week in advance notice. Tests are written based on previous Regent’s exam questions. The reading level may be more difficult than students are accustomed to. We use previous Regent’s questions from the get-go so that students will get adjusted to this style by June.
Tests and quizzes are reviewed in class so students have the opportunity to ask questions and make corrections. ALL tests require a parent/guardian signature.
Tests and quizzes are kept in the student’s portfolio folder. In June, students have the opportunity to take home these exams and use it as a study tool for the Regents. Some quizzes are announced on the weekly outline. Occasional pop quizzes are given.
District Absentee Policy:
According to the SOMS Survival Guide, the district policy regarding absences is limited to 20 days for a one credit course. Absences from a one credit course include: illness, music lessons, and class trips, being at the nurse, guidance appointments, and any other excuse that would prevent a student from attending their regularly scheduled class. Please make sure that you read this section in the Survival Guide and Attendance Policy handout.
Absences:
Since weekly outlines will be provided, students returning from an absence are still required to complete and turn in homework assignments when they return. Whenever you are absent you must call your homework buddy to find out what work you missed and arrange to copy notes from. If extra time is needed to complete assignments due to illness or family emergencies, please make arrangements with me. The day you return to school make sure you have received all the work you missed. Choose buddies who are responsible and good note takers. Be wise in your decision.
Student Classroom Procedures:
1. As you enter the classroom pick up any handouts for the day
2. Be in your seat at the start of the class period
3. Copy homework assignments into your planner from your weekly outline
4. QUIETLY START YOUR “DO NOW” RIGHT AWAY!
Leaving Early:
If you must leave class early for any reason (including music lessons) you are responsible for ALL work covered that period. Before you leave make sure you hand in your homework, and receive all class work and homework assignments for that day. You must turn in any work due the next day ON TIME for full credit. Classwork must be made up as soon as possible.
