Parents: Please encourage your student to personalize his or her Writer’s Notebook by gluing down copies of photos or graphic cut-outs (from magazines or your printer) that depict her/his interests, memories, preferences or wishes on the covers. (However, please do not do the work for him or her…  Okay, you may add the clear contact cover or clear shipping or book tape when the notebook is ready.)  These images will help your young writer get inspired to write about topics that matter most to her or his heart.  (See the center of the notebook for a Map of your Writer’s Heart.) This does not have to be achieved over night, although I asked students to begin thinking about what they might add to their notebooks two weeks ago.  Please remind your student that his/her writer’s notebook must be returned to school daily as it is needed during Writer’s Workshop in class.

Finally, notebooks may be brought home occasionally for a bit of writing at home, but please resist the temptation to correct your child’s writing unless requested by your child.  It is more important for children to feel safe, and to get their thoughts on paper for reflection than to write perfectly spelled or crafted full sentences.  We will work on grammar in school, no worries!

Thank you for your kind support of your student’s effort!

Dear Parents:  I sent home a photo authorization form today.  Kindly sign indicating your preference and have your child return it tomorrow, please.  Also, some children brought home a sheet to prepare for a brief speech about running for SAC (Student Advisory Council) Representative.  Feel free to assist your student to prepare for a one minute persuasive speech about their candidacy.  We will be voting next week so the forms are due by Monday at the very latest.  Please help your child rehearse for the brief presentation.

Also, some children took home their classroom job application to complete at home.  Please ensure that the application is returned tomorrow.  (They are self-explanatory.)  Thank you.

Reading: Read for 20 minutes & update your reading list in your Reader’s Notebook to reflect when you finish or abandon a book.  Stop and jot your wonderings or reactions to the story.  (If you abandon a book, write explaining why.)  When you finish a book, write a letter to Ms. Vega-Cabrera using the prompts in the notebook.  Remember that you are NOT writing a book report so do not retell the plot.  It is your reactions to the text that you should write about.  Tell what surprised you, move you, intrigued you, etc.  (Use the prompts found in your Reader’s Notebook as needed.)
