Spotting Rainbows

Image

I like rainbows because they are colorful and bring to mind joy and hope—hope that at the end of the rainbow one might find a cherished “pot of gold” (whatever your dream may be).  I find that typically young children enjoy drawing rainbows.  Those hopeful scenes always make me smile, and I say to myself, what a wonderful world!

Recently I learned of a social media initiative that “encourages people to draw rainbows and post them in their windows.”  The rainbows are intended for cheering up quarantining children.  I imagine that local heroes (who must bravely travel outside their home to do essential work while we quarantine for everyone’s safety) may smile at our kids’ rainbows too on their way to and from home.

Maybe there are rainbows already posted on your front windows.  If not, you may wish to encourage your children to add a little color to our world by posting a rainbow.  Then, from your window you might try rainbow spotting on your street.  If you venture out for a brief car ride up and down your neighborhood, don’t forget that these days everyone, including children 2 years and up, must wear a mask while outdoors.

You may wish to take a photo of your child holding up his or her rainbow.  (No names on posters, please.)  I would be happy to post those photos on our class blog for all to enjoy.

In time this tragedy will pass and what may be left can include lovely memories of brief drives on our street or online, spotting rainbows.

First Morning Meeting via Zoom

Dear Class,
You are invited to our first-ever online Morning Meeting via Zoom Tuesday, March 31, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. During the video conference Mr. C. and I will greet you and share about how distance learning will go for us. You will be able to say “hi” to your classmates, and there will be a panel on the right side where you can type questions and appropriate comments. The same rules of our usual morning meetings at school apply, so be courteous and kind. You may NOT record any part of our meeting (nor may anyone in your household record either); neither will we! No one may capture anyone’s image nor post it anywhere. Those are strict rules!

Online learning is like being in the classroom. You must dress appropriately and use your best manners. Listen and try not to speak while the moderator (teachers) or a classmate is speaking. Your parent may choose to mute your video so that we cannot see you, and only hear your voice. If you mute your microphone we will not be able to hear you, but you can still type questions on the chat panel. So find a comfy seat where there is a blank wall behind you, and then click the following link to log into our Zoom video conference Tuesday, March 31 at 10:00 in the morning Mr. C and I cannot wait to see you all!

Free websites

I hope you are well.  Sending virtual hugs to all my wonderful students. 🤗  Here is a link to a spreadsheet with many websites that are offering free access at this time. Follow the instructions and use the links on the document to access the websites. (Moms and Dads, please preview any and all sites.)

Parents, if you have not yet joined us on Remind, please download the app, and join us as I continue to use the Remind app for quick and brief communication.

Also, kindly reach out in any way possible, except physically 😊, to your classmates and their family.  Together we can!  #thistooshallpass.

During tough times, the tough get going!

Dearest Class,

I miss you already!  Please continue to read daily and complete the paper reading log for March you brought home. I will be activating a form on here where you can input your weekly reading response.
Work on Dreambox.com and your math activity book through unit 4.
For a while, put down the gaming controller if you have one. If you can get to your backyard or deck, sit near a tree. Be still. Be quiet. Listen. Look up! See the blue sky between the tree branches. Breathe deeply and smile. Say our mantra. “May I be happy.” “May I be safe.” “May I be strong.” “May I live with peace.”
Be helpful to your family anyway possible. How?  Look at what needs to get done and do it. Entertain yourself and siblings, if any. Write a scene and act it out for your family.  Call an elderly relative or neighbor.  Write and/or sketch in a journal.  Read, read. read!  Think of me, thinking of you.

Passion: It is What Motivates and Drives You

February Theme of the Month:

Communities Support One Another to Make Change (passion)

Overview: Passion is a strong and barely controllable emotion; something you really care about
RULER Emotion Words: motivated, inspired, proud

How do we find our passion?

Myron Uhlberg wrote Dad,Jackie, and me and it is our book of the month.  This story of a young boy and his hearing-impaired father shows how their love of baseball—and their admiration for the newest player for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Jackie Robinson—brings them closer together.  As their shared passion for the great American pastime helps to deepen the relationship between father and son, it also deepens their understanding and acceptance of the differences between people.

Communities Work Together

January’s Theme ~ Communities Work Together

Overview: Cooperation the process of working together
RULER Emotion Words: Fulfilled, satisfied, grateful

How to be a Cooperative Person

  • Listen carefully to others and be sure you understand what they are saying
  • Share when you have something that others would like to have
  • Take turns when there is something that nobody wants to do, or when more than one person wants to do the same thing
  • Compromise when you have a serious conflict
  • Do your part the very best that you possibly can. This will inspire others to do the same
  • Show appreciation to people for what they contribute
  • Encourage others to do their best
  • Make people feel important and needed. Working together is a lot more fun that way
  • Don’t isolate or exclude anyone. Everybody has something valuable to offer, and nobody likes being left out
