7th grade

Seventh Graders begin with making pancakes and muffins. They then move on as we explore Nutrition, beginning with interesting articles and a video on Agri-Business. Why GMO’s have penetrated our food supply, and the pro’s and con’s of genetically modified organisms. We will also explore the alarming increase of allergies and their connection to those foods we eat. A look at the pervasive use of anti-biotics and growth hormones on our animals which brings us to the organic versus non-organic food industry. Working with the online program of Choosemyplate.gov, students begin to connect those nutrients to the food groups. They evaluate through a 3 day food journal what their eating patterns are, and how to improve them. Nutritious snacks are studied as the class decides upon, and creates their own in the labs, based on the nutrient data. Understanding how to read Food Labels are all part of the exercise, as students compete with one another for the healthiest snack! Decision Making and Financial Literacy activities ensue for significant lifelong skills and their future!
