Wumbers

A “wumber” is a word crea8ted using numbers.

Example: Don’t h8 others. 4give them.

Amy Rosenthal truly understands phonological awareness (the ability to hear the smaller sounds that make up words.) Wumbers encourage kids to slow down and think. Adults to children sometimes need to repeat the words over and over until they understand. Many of my friends complain about my text-messages because I try to use wumbers to intrigue them. Being clever will not destroy your ability to spell, it will increase your creativity.

Challenge: In this day and age of text-message shorthand, some of your English teachers may declare this book a disaster. Read the article Text-Speak and post your opinion on whether or not texting should be allowed or even taught in schools.  Make sure your opinion is in text or “wumber” format!
