This month we celebrate Memorial Day and honor all those who lost their lives protecting our freedoms. We will have a special assembly with Gold Star Families sponsored by the Vetiquette Program. We are using this month’s challenge to create our own Flanders Field at Cottage Lane.
The Poppy Lady by Barbara Walsh is our book of the month. It is About Moina Belle Michael who helped establish the red poppy as a symbol of remembrance for veterans. Please listen to the story again here:
The following video is the famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae written in May 1915. This video is in remembrance of all those who have lost their lives during war.
A Poppy is to Remember is another tribute to our American service men and women, as well as to those from other nations who have fought side by side with them to restore peace and freedom in troubled regions of the world. Even as they fought and died together, let us also remember them together.
As a tribute from you to all the soldiers who lost their lives fighting for freedom create a pinwheel poppy in his/her name. We are challenging you to:
- Use red paper, a straw, a brass paper fastener and a label to create a poppy.
- Click on this link to learn How to Make a Pinwheel Poppy.
- On the label please make sure write the name of a soldier who died while serving our country.
- Include the name of the war.
- Write the year he/she was born and when he/she died.
- Feel free to research someone in your family, a local soldier or someone you don’t know.
- Make as many poppies as you desire.
- Due by Monday, May 21st.
