May 1, 1931 the Empire State Building was completed. Ten million bricks, sixty thousand tons of steel, two thousand tons of marble, sixty-five hundred windows, seventy miles of water pipes, eighteen hundred and sixty stairs were used. Sky Boys by Hopkinson and Ransome paint a beautiful story of this historic site. You can visit this site: Tower Lights to understand the different lights that celebrate the various cultures. Did you know there is a yearly race called the Empire State Building Run-Up? Participants race up the 86 flights to the observation deck. Although it is no longer the tallest building in the world, it is still known for its majesty and proportion. Visit here to view NYC from the rooftop.

The Guggenheim
The Guggenheim is an art museum in New York City. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Frank and his client, Solomon R. Guggenheim, often argued about the location, shape and design of this building. Both Frank and Solomon would die before the Guggenheim was completed in 1959. The museum is a spiral structure that is smaller on the bottom and bigger on the top. When you are standing on the top of the rotunda, you can look down and see all the way to the first floor. When you go down to rotunda you can see a variety of art work.

This one is on my bucket list!
The Chrysler Building
The Chrysler Building was starting to be built in 1928 and was finished in 1930. Its architect was William van Alen and its owner was Walter B. Chrysler, from the car manufacturer. The race to build the world’s tallest building started, with the Bank of Manhattan (now 40 Wall Street) and the Chrysler building. To most people, it looked like the Bank of Manhattan would win, but the spire of the Chrysler Building was constructed in secret inside the tower. Just a week after the Bank had topped out the Chrysler Building placed its spire on top-making it 1,045 feet, and the new world’s tallest structure. But only about one year later the Empire State Building was erected. The gargoyles depict Chrysler car ornaments and the spire is modeled on a radiator grille. Since it was restored in 1996, it glitters again like it must have in the 1930s.It is now regarded as one of America’s greatest buildings, and the Chrysler Building is often featured on the cover of architectural books and magazines.

The Eiffel Tower was named after Gustave Eiffel. He was the engineer for the tower. It is 320 meters 1,050 feet tall. It is made out of iron lattice. It is the tallest building in Paris. I picked the Eiffel Tower because I went there when I was three years old. I ate in the Tower with my family. Visit this site to play a game http://www.fupa.com/game/Puzzles-flash-games/eiffel-tower.html

Chloe, it must of been fun to visit the Eiffel Tower! I wish I was with you. I honestly did not know that the Eiffel Tower was named after Gustave Eiffel. If I was the engineer for the tower then it might be called the Weitzman Tower. What do you think? I think that the name the Weitzman Tower is catchy.
The Twin Towers
The Twin Towers were once the tallest buildings in the world. They were 1,368 and 1,362 feet high!!! They were designed to sway in the wind. On August 7, 1974, Philippe Petit walked between the Twin Towers on a rope, with no harness or anything!!! A year later, a fire breaks out on the 11th floor soon spreading to the 9th and 14th floor but soon was extinguished. The architect who designed the Twin Towers was Minoru Yamasaki. If you want to learn more about the Twin Towers and the World Trade Center go to http://www.wtc.com/about/wtchistory-wtc-timeline. This gives the entire history of the buildings.

The GE Building is an Art Deco skyscraper that forms the centerpiece of Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, USA. Known as the RCA Building until 1988, it is most famous for housing the headquarters of the television network NBC. At 850 feet (259 m) tall, the 70-story building is the 10th tallest building in New York City and the 33rd tallest in the United States. Some of the building’s nicknames include The Slab and 30 Rock. The latter is derived from its address which is at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.www.wikipedia.org/wiki/GE_Building
Wow Stephen! I didn’t know the Twin Towers were designed to sway in the wind. I also think that Phillip Pettite is still alive and doing circus acts. Great job!
Designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, the Museum reopened in midtown Manhattan on November 20, 2004, to coincide with MoMA’s seventy-fifth anniversary . The 630,000-square-foot Museum is nearly twice the size of the former facilitation. It was completed in November, 2006. A six-story gallery building—which includes many double-height floors—houses the main collection and temporary exhibition galleries. In the lobby Taniguchi takes inspiration from the idea of the street, and transfers it inside. This interior promenade offers expansive views of both The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden and the light-filled Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium, which soars 110 feet above street level! The lobby also serves as the “information center” of the Museum, with ticket counters; information about membership, current exhibitions, and programs; and access to the Museum’s theaters, restaurant, stores, and Sculpture Garden. The building also features an entrance for school groups, a 125-seat auditorium, an orientation center, workshop space for teacher training programs, study centers, and a large lobby with double-height views into the Sculpture Garden.
I chose this building because I visit museums all the time in New York City. i thought this would be a good one to write about because it opened about 5 years ago! just visit this website to learn more about it…
