Women in Science is a celebration of women in science, technology, engineering and math. March 8th is international Women’s day and is celebrated annually. Thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements and ends on March 24th, the end of National Science and Engineering week.
Take this time to learn about some of the amazing women who have made significant scientific contributions. These websites might inspire you, “Women in Science” artwork by Rachel Ignotofsky and Incredible Brilliant Women Who Left a Mark on Science.
Research a famous female scientist and post what she did to this blog.
I choose Jane Goodall. Jane was a zoologist.Jane Goodall Studied wildlife. She mostly studied chimpanzees. She started studying chimps in the 1960’s. She found that, “it isn’t only human beings who have personality, who are capable of rational thought [and] emotions like joy and sorrow.” Chimpanzees have personalities too. She also noticed that they do things like humans do such as hugs, kisses and pats on the back. Also, when Goodall was doing field work, she noticed that they took natrual resources and put them together to make tools. Also she noticed that chimps aren’t vegetarians, one chimp took a stalk of grass and placed it in the termite hole and ate it. These two actions showed people wrong because people always thought that chimpanzees were vegetarians although some are not and also, it showed that they do have the capability to do stuff such as creating tools out of resources. The harsh side of chimpanzees is that the female chimpanzees would sometimes kill other females to keep their power steady. As a result, Goodall found that chimpanzees were very kind and loving, even maybe more than humans but also very harsh. They are very family oriented. There is so much to learn about Jane Goodall but I took a closer look at the behavior she saw from the chimpanzees.
Kristen,
I have a great book to share with you. Based on your research you could have written it. Maybe it will inspire you with another scientist.
