April is National Autism Awareness Month! National Autism Awareness Month represents an excellent opportunity to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance and to draw attention to the tens of thousands facing an autism diagnosis each year. Watch this video to learn about World Autism Awareness Day | Understanding and Supporting Individuals with Autism.
Now we would like you to meet a few special people related to our Cottage Lane family.
Meet Jesse!
Mr. Krump’s son, Jesse has Autism too. Jesse loves to swim. He goes to an indoor, Olympic pool and can swim 66 lengths! That’s one whole mile! He was in Special Olympics swimming event at West Point, but, in the middle of a race he cut across three lanes to go to the diving board area! Jesse sometimes laughs out loud and we can’t figure out what is so funny. He is loved at home and at church! Really, by everyone. |
Meet Connor!
Connor is Mrs. McBride’s nephew. He is 14 years old. He loves his iPad and watching his favorite show, Yo Gabba Gabba. Connor is very sensitive to loud noises. He prefers quiet, comfy spaces. You can always find him supporting his brother and sister at sporting events or hanging out in my bed! He is just the sweetest and gentlest young boy. |
What can you do?
- Wear blue on
- Shine a blue light bulb outside your home for “Light it Up Blue.”
- Read books with characters who have Autism – Suggestions from Reading Rockets
- Puzzle pieces are the symbol of autism. Design, color and/or create with these ideas.
- Be a great peer by watching these videos – What’s up with Nick? and The World of Autism PSA
- What is Autism is another video by Fixer Way who has Asperger syndrome – a form of Autism. He made this film for young people to understand the nature and impact of autism. In my opinion, the difficult part of living with Autism is the lack of understanding of differences. Most of us are kind to others who might look different, yet it is hard to accept others who look like us but act differently.
