Cottage Lane Students Place 2nd in the Region
Students in Mrs. McBride’s classes participated in the SIFMA Foundation’s Stock Market Game™ (SMG). SMG gave students the chance to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in an on-line portfolio. Students experienced economic and financial concepts that they’ll use for the rest of their lives. The program reinforced essential skills and concepts: critical thinking, decision-making, cooperation and communication, independent research, saving and investing. Students used real internet research and news updates, making the simulation an even better mirror of the real marketplace.
Henry H., Jacob O., James C. were the winners! Their total equity was valued at $116,520 which gave them 2nd place out of 51 teams in their division. These students purchased stocks in Netflix, Apple, Yahoo, Johnson & Johnson, which gave them a 16.52 percent return on their investments. While the competitive game created student excitement, the educational experience delivered the biggest impact. These 5th graders were keenly aware of the world around them and used this information to make good investment decisions.
There was much suspense playing The Stock Market Game because we always have to wait to see what place we are in the following day we play the game. Although I am disappointed we didn’t win, I am happy for Henry, James and Jacob.
