Chirpy in Iceland

P1110434Iceland has LOTS of volcanoes. I’m standing on old lava from a volcano. It flowed right into the ocean. How cool is THAT?!?

Iceland is REALLY beautiful!!!

The country is very far north so it has ENORMOUS glaciers!

The glaciers are FANTASTIC. We even went snowmobiling on one!

Sadly they’re melting more than ever, because Earth is warming up. The glacier behind me used to cover this whole area. It’s melted way back. Can you see it behind me?

When pieces of the glacier break off into a lagoon, or into an ocean, they’re called icebergs. Whoa! This is COLD!

For more pictures of Iceland go to Ice on Earth blog page.

Can you see the line of volcanoes in this photo? Many of them have worn down over time.

The ground under Iceland is moving a lot, so it has earthquakes and volcanoes. Two tectonic plates (big chunks of the earth) are pulling apart from each other right in the middle of this country! We got a bird’s-eye-view of some of the volcanoes when we took a flight in a little plane.

To see how Iceland uses the heat generated from all this earth movement,

Speaking of birds, I met a puffin. She was sooooooooo cute! But I became quiet and shy around her. I didn’t say a word! Before I knew it, she had flown away.  🙁

This house was built to show what the houses looked like during the days of the Vikings (~900 AD). It’s built out of earth and rocks. Cool, huh?

Ack!!! Vikings!!! Get me out of here!

Hey, big guy! How about sharing some of that fish?!

Have you ever looked inside a volcano?

Have you ever been IN a volcano?! Scary, I can tell you! I’m hiding in Ms. Christie-Blick’s backpack.

Phew! This is better…..just sitting on this piece of lava reading about volcanoes.

Hey! Did you know that Icelandic kids go to school? Hmmmm. That gives me an idea. Maybe they’d like to have some American e-pals…. 🙂

  1. Me and Daniela agree with you Chripy, that must have been TERRIFYING!!!! But besides that the pictures were SO COOL! Besides the fact that it was scary, inside the volcano was very pretty. We learned that there are many volcanos and glaciers in Iceland.

  2. We didn’t know what viking houses looked like, as well as what they were made of. Also, we didn’t know that glaciers were that big!

  3. WOW!!!!!!! Iceland is very cool! I want to go to Iceland and see volcanoes too!
Vikings!!! I didn’t know there were Vikings in Iceland.

  4. WOW!!!!!!!! Iceland is really cool, I never new that Iceland had that many glaciers.
I want to go to Iceland and see volcanoes too!

  5. I did not know you could go snowmobiling on a glacier! That would be so cool. And I think it was really beautiful when Ms.Christie-Blick was next to and in the volcano.

I learned that two tectonic plates are pulling apart from each other right in the middle right in the middle of this country

  7. I think it was pretty cool looking at everything that Ms. Christie-Blick did, in Chirpy’s point of view. I learned that you can usually only find glaciers in places that are ice cold, not out in the open on a hot summer day.

  8. Andy: I learned that Volcanos turn into something that people actually can go in. One day I hope I can go into a volcano.

Kylee: Hi Chirpy! I learned that there are a lot of volcanos and earthquakes in Iceland. I can’t believe how big the volcanos are! I hope I can see Iceland in person one day!

  9. Oisin:I learned that vikings lived around 900 AD if you did’nt know AD stands for after death.THat is what I learned Chirpie

Victoria: Hey chirpy somthing cool I learned was that since the earth was getting hot the and glaciers were turning into smaller chunks of ice

  10. Hey Chirpy I found that what you said about Iceland they have really big Glaciers. I also could not believe that there is a big line of volcanoes now I know that there are probably a lot of plates. I hope you had a lot of fun at aIceland

  11. WOW!the water in the volcano is so clear is it because it came rain or is it from people not touching it chirpy? I didn’t know that there were puffins in iceland chirpy!
I think that it is so cool that you can go inside the volcanoe

I learned that Chirpy was scared of going inside a volcanoes also, I learned that people can go inside certain volcanoes. That are not active.

  13. We thought Iceland looks like a cool place to live, We didn’t know that there are puffins all over Iceland and how interesting their beaks look from a distance.

  14. I had no idea that a gigantic volcano could be completely covered in grass. I thought it was known for volcanos to be made of rock. 🙂

  15. Hi chirpy, I learned many things from you. One thing that I learned from you was that houses back then were very different than houses today. The houses back then were made of earth and rock. Iceland looks beautiful too.

  16. Iceland looks like a cool place, Chirpy. One question for Ms. Christie-Blick… How did you get to the inside of that volcano? Was the water [Is it water?] hot?

    • We climbed up the side to the top. One side of the volcano was worn away, so it was an easy hike down to the inside. The water is cold. It’s from the rain. This volcano has not erupted lately, so it was not hot.
