I’ve got great news, class. It is official! Our class will be getting a virtual class pet! It will be a dairy calf from the Discovery Dairy program. We have been assigned a farm in upstate New York. On October 11th, our class will be assigned a dairy calf We will learn all about her life on the farm and will get to take virtual class trips to visit her home.
We have been assigned to The Chittenden Family at Dutch Hollow Farm in Schoack Landing, New York. Farmer Emily will be our contact. Check below for some pictures and information about the farm. I can’t wait to find out her name! I hope you’re as excited as I am!

Elementary Students “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety”
Thank you to the Blauvelt, Tappan and Sparkill-Palisades fire department volunteers for visiting our elementary schools today to teach our students about fire prevention!
The theme of National Fire Prevention Week 2021 (October 3-9) is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety!” The campaign aims to educate children on the different sounds that smoke (beeping) and carbon monoxide (chirping) alarms make and what action to take to stay safe. Free resources are posted on the National Fire Protection Association website.
Firefighters shared practical tips about what to do in case of a fire, how to operate a fire extinguisher and making sure that they have a family fire emergency plan. They also suited up in firefighting gear to show students how rescuers may look and sound in the event of a fire and demonstrated some of the equipment they use for low-visibility environments and for vehicle rescues. Two key takeaways in case of fire: 1) Make lots of noise so that firefighters can find you, and 2) Don’t stay in the house searching for pets; firefighters will rescue them.

A Hug from Afar
This school year has not been typical to say the least. We have talked about how different the school year has been for all of us. When we were chatting, the students mentioned how much they missed seeing some of their loved ones. So, we figured out a way to connect with them! For our latest craft project, we decided to create “hugs” for our loved ones. Students created depictions of themselves and wrote a special note for their family member, friend, and/or pet.
Rockland Read-In Parent Guest Speakers
A huge thanks to all of our volunteer parent guest speakers who participated in our Rockland Read-In Day. The kids absolutely lit up when they saw their loved ones reading to their class. Such great memories that I know will last a lifetime!
As per the students’ request, here is a slideshow of the pre-recorded videos. Enjoy the fantastic stories, everyone!
Did Someone Say An Indoor Snowball Fight? Let It SNOW!!!!!
Students have been working really hard lately and I wanted to reward them with some indoor fun. So…I surprised them with an indoor snowball fight. The kids loved it! They especially loved aiming at ME! We had a ton of fun as you can see! (Dr. Pritchard gave us permission)

Ask A Veteran: “Heroes don’t always wear capes.”
Our class came up with some questions for U.S. Veterans for Veteran’s Day. I sent them out to friends of mine and in turn received video responses.
Each day our class would watch one video as students would love seeing their questions answered by every day heroes. Enjoy the video compilation from Veterans from the U.S. Army, and U.S. Airforce. We are so proud to be connected to these wonderful folks. Enjoy the video!

Local Firefighters Talk Fire Prevention with Elementary Students:
Thank you to the members of the Blauvelt, Orangeburg, Tappan and Sparkill-Palisades volunteer fire departments, who are visiting our elementary schools over the next two weeks as part of their annual fire prevention outreach program! This year’s National Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10) theme is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.” With children spending more time at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, learning how to stay safe is more important than ever. Free resources are posted on the National Fire Protection Association website.
Firefighters shared practical tips about steering clear of matches and ovens, keeping electrical devices away from water and practicing their family fire emergency plans. They also suited up in firefighting gear to show students how rescuers may look and sound in the event of a fire.
Families are encouraged to reach out to their local fire departments if they need help with creating a fire emergency plan and every household should have a working smoke alarm. The Rockland County Health Department’s Healthy Neighborhoods Program can provide and install free smoke alarms to eligible residents, including seniors and low-to-modest income and at-risk families. For more information, call the Healthy Neighborhoods Program at (845) 364-3290 or (845) 364-3292.
