Please read below for our first enrichment opportunities of the school year! For each enrichment click on the link the specific link to sign up. Each enrichment has it’s own start and end dates and they all operate a little differently depending on the teacher and the schedule. The enrichment teachers will contact you to confirm your child’s place in the program. In some cases, we may not have room for everyone, but we will continue to work on expanding and finding room for as many students as we can!

 

All Grades:

Art and Social Action: 3rd – 5th Grade

Students will create posters and signs bringing awareness to current social issues, both globally and in our community.  This art work will enhance our school environment and support school functions. Students will be involved in topics, creating art, and displaying art in our school.

When: Tuesday mornings, beginning on October 11th, for a ten week block on the mornings school is in session. 8:00-8:40 a.m.

Third Grade

1. Video Production with Mrs. Guzas- 3rd Grade

Mrs. Guzas would like to begin offering additional technology opportunities for 3rd grade children at Cottage Lane. Our first session will be starting on October 26th and every Wednesday thereafter for 8 weeks. During that session, we will offer an early morning drop-off Basic Video Production enrichment where students will write a write, shoot and edit a short movie.

There will be no cost to participate in any club. Each club will begin at 8:10 and will end at 8:45 AM. If you would like your child to participate, please fill out the permission slip on-line at the link below. I will take the first 15 that I receive for our first session and offer additional sessions for the remainder of the year as needed. Please note, as with all of our early drop-off programs, there will be no transportation provided by the district. This sign-up is for the entire year. You will receive an invitation email when your child is selected to participate.

Here is how the club works:

  • Video Production is offered every Wednesday at 8:15 AM for eight consecutive weeks.

2. Chess with Mr. Jones-3rd Grade 

Chess Society will meet every Friday morning that school is in session. We will meet in 10 week blocks. All students are welcome to join Chess Society. This includes beginners, who have no/ limited understanding/ knowledge of: how to set up a chess board; how the pieces move; how to play; as well as children who are experienced Grandmasters, and everyone in between. Due to space limitations, we will only be able to accept 45 3rd grade Chess Society members for each 10 week session. The next 45 students on the chess club list who were not included in the first 10 week session will be eligible to attend the second session. We will continue down the list until all students have had an opportunity to participate. Once everyone has had a chance to attend Chess Society, we will start back at the top of the list (i.e. students who began in session one). In the event that school is cancelled, or Mr. Jones is out, Chess Society will continue on the following Friday, and that group will meet until 10 sessions have been held. The first Chess Society session will begin on the following date:

• Friday September 30, 2016 – 8:15 to 8:45
• The Chess Society sessions will continue to cycle through early June, 2017.
• Please Note – Space is extremely limited. If your child misses three sessions, he or she will be moved to the bottom of the list so that children who are able to attend can participate.

3. ZeeBitsters with Mr. Eckert- 3rd Grade

Something new is brewing at Cottage Lane that will spark your inner inventor! Mr. Eckert’s new Littlebits club, ZeeBitsters is gearing up to begin.

Littebits are small magnetic circuit modules that snap together to perform tasks and create inventions. Each month, a group of students will take part in a monthly challenge that is created by Littlebits and we will build a number of inventions to meet the requirements of the challenge.

A schedule will be created to include all students for at least one cycle. Students will be part of the club for a one month cycle that will meet twice a week. We will attempt to include all students who want to participate. It is important that you attend all sessions so that students have sufficient time to complete their inventions.

Tuesdays and Thursdays – 8:15 to 9:00

Fourth Grade:

  1. Book Club-4th Grade The best part about being in a book club is getting to spend time with friends talking about stories! Join the 4th Grade book club and have fun reading short nonfiction and fiction texts. This is a great opportunity to read and discuss fun stories with friends! We hope you join us! Ms. Fluger will be leading this group which will meet from 8:00 to 8:45 on Thursday mornings.     sign up here
  2. Chess and Robotics Clubs for 4th GradeMr. Tanenbaum would like to begin offering additional technology opportunities for 4th and 5th grade children at Cottage Lane.
    • On Tuesday mornings, beginning on October 11th, we will offer early morning drop-off Basic Robotics Club where students in fourth and fifth grade will design and build various types of Lego Robots.  There will be a maximum of 20 students allowed in this program at a time for each six week sessions.  The first 20 applications that are received will be offered space in our first session.  Additional sessions will be offered for the remainder of the year as needed.  All children who sign up will be accommodated at some point during the year.
    • On Wednesday mornings, beginning on October 12th, we will offer an early morning drop-off Fourth Grade Chess Strategy Club.  Any fourth grade student may attend any session.  There will be a maximum of 20 students allowed in this program at a time for each six week sessions.  The first 20 applications that are received will be offered space in our first session.  Additional sessions will be offered for the remainder of the year as needed.  All children who sign up will be accommodated at some point during the year.
    • On Mondays and Thursdays, beginning October 19th, we will offer Competition Robotics. In this program, a team of 10 students will train and compete in a robotics meet later in the year. I will pick 10 students in fourth and fifth grade for each day the club is offered. There will be a 20 student maximum for this program. If time allows, and the need is there, we will offer the program in the spring as well. If there is insufficient space for all applicants in the Competition Program, students who are not selected for the team will be invited to participate in the Tuesday Robotics Club.

  3. NEW!!! Fifth Grade Chess Club

2. Heart Inspiration Mind (H.I.M.)- Boys Running Group-5th Grade:  The CLE Heart Inspiration Mind (H.I.M.) Running Society is one such activity that will be offered this school year. The group is not just about running. That’s boring! This group will engage in fun-filled lessons and activities designed to help children make the connection between physical activity with a healthy lifestyle and a positive self concept.

H.I.M. Running Society will meet every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon that school is in session. We will meet until early December. We hope to celebrate the culmination of the program with participation in a local 5K race (TBA). All 5th grade boys are welcome to join. This includes beginners/ children who do not participate in athletic activities, as well as children who are experienced runners/ athletes, and everyone in between. Due to space limitations, we will only be able to accept 15 5th grade boys. In the event that school is cancelled, or Mrs. Eckert AND Mr. Jones are out, the group will be cancelled and will meet the following session (Wednesday or the following Tuesday). If there is a cancelled, we will contact parents as soon as possible so you may make arrangements. The first Heart Inspiration Mind Running Society session will begin on the following date:

• Tuesday September 27, 2016 – 3:45 to 4:45
• The H.I.M. Running Society sessions will continue to cycle through early December, 2016.
• Please Note – Space is extremely limited. If your child misses three sessions, he or she will be dropped from the program so another children can participate.

3.S.H.E Running Club : “We have ….SOUL…. HEART….. and….. ENERGY!”- 5th Grade Join our Cottage Lane Girl’s Running Club, where girls will be inspired to become both emotionally and physically fit! This group will be run by Mrs. King and 5th grade parent Natalie Boelman. It will meet on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45 to 4:40.

S.H.E. Running Society will meet every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon that school is in session. We will meet until early December.
