For three weeks students in Kottie Christie-Blick’s 5th grade Cottage Lane classroom had the opportunity to have a teaching intern from Germany come to observe their school, and work with students, to experience American teaching methods. Ms. Yvonne Sallat who is presently attending college in Germany opted to do her required teaching internship abroad to see how differently schools in the lower grades are conducted in America. Her contact was made through her former host family who had a daughter attending Cottage Lane and they were able to set Ms. Sallat up with a three week internship. When asked, she said she finds the biggest differences in the independence of the children who work on their own while getting guidance from the teacher. Ms. Sallat also visited a 3rd and 4th grade class. Ms. Sallat hopes to get a teaching job in Germany teaching 5th grade and higher. She will remain with her host family in Orangeburg and enjoy her New York experience until mid-May.
