Debate Club
We are excited to announce our new Debate Club. We will have an informational meeting on October 29th at 7:30 AM in Room 305. We welcome all fourth and fifth graders to our first meeting! No need to sign up! We plan to run six week cycles. The first cycle would be held on Thursdays at 7:30AM in Room 305 for fifth graders. The second six week cycle would also be held on Thursdays at 7:30 AM and would be open to both fifth and fourth graders.
Debate has been one of the most powerful academic programs to teach students every academic skill – public speaking, research, evidence based argumentation, critical thinking, reading, writing, listening, and questioning. Debate teaches every academic subject including political science, public policy, current events, geography, civics, international affairs, economics, philosophy, critical theory, and technology. Students also learn 21st century skills in communication, collaboration, critical reasoning and more. Debate participants are excited about how much they increase their confidence, learn diverse perspectives, and propose powerful ideas and public policies. And most of all debate is just fun! Students will be engaged in debate on four Saturdays throughout New York City competing against other Elementary and Middle schools. Please email knadler@socsd.org for more information.
Robotics and Chess – Grades 4 & 5
Mr. Tanenbaum would like to begin offering additional technology opportunities for 4th and 5th grade children at Cottage Lane. Our first session will be starting on October 27th and every Tuesday thereafter for 6 weeks. During that session, we will offer an early morning drop-off Basic Robotics Club where students will design and build various types of Lego Robots. Starting on Wednesday October 28th and every Wednesday morning thereafter, we will offer an early morning drop-off Chess Strategy Club.
There will be no cost to participate in any club. Each club will begin at 8:30 AM, and will run until the start of school. If you would like your child to participate, please fill out the permission slip on-line at the link below. I will take the first 20 that I receive for our first session and offer additional sessions for the remainder of the year as needed. Please note, as with all of our early drop-off programs, there will be no transportation provided by the district. Children are welcome to sign up for both Chess and Robotics. If they do, I will offer them one opportunity to participate per-session, and will make every effort to offer them an opportunity to join each club at some point in the year. This sign-up is for the entire year. You will receive an invitation email when your child is selected to participate.
On Mondays and Thursdays, we will offer Competition Robotics. In this program, a team of 10 students will train and compete in a robotics meet on Saturday, February at the Middle School. I will pick 10 students for each day the club is offered. There will be a 20 student maximum for this program. If time allows, and the need is there, we will offer the program in the spring as well. Students may sign up for either Robotics Club or Competition Robotics, but not both. If there is not space in the Competition Program, students who are not selected for the team will be invited to participate in the Robotics Club.

Chess Club – Grade 3 with Mr. Jones
As you may already know, as part of our school’s support of the SOCSD District Goals of Enhancing the Needs of Diverse Learners, Enhancing Student Literacy, Foster a Respectful Learning Environment, and Provide Students with Skills for the 21st Century, CLE provides various opportunities for children to participate in different groups and activities throughout the school year. The CLE Chess Club is such activity that will be offered again this school year.
Chess Club will meet every Friday morning that school is in session. The club will meet in 10 week sessions. All students are welcome to join Chess Club, including children who know how to play chess and beginners, who do not know how to set up a chess board, how the pieces move, how to play, or have limited/ minimal knowledge of the game. Due to space limitations, we will only be able to accept 40 3rd grade Chess Club members for each 10 week session. The next 40 students on the chess club list who were not included in the first 10 week session will be eligible to attend the second session. We will continue down the list until all students have had an opportunity to participate. Once everyone has had a chance to attend Chess Club, we will start back at the top of the list (i.e. students who began in session one). In the event that school is cancelled, or Mr. Jones is out, Chess Club will continue on the following Friday, and that group will meet until 10 sessions have been held. The first Chess Club session will begin on the following date:
• Friday October 23, 2015 – 8:15 to 8:45
• The Chess Club sessions will continue to cycle through early June, 2015.
• Please Note – Space is extremely limited. If your child misses three sessions, he or she will be moved to the bottom of the list so that children who are able to attend can participate.
