November’s Superpower is Gratitude!

“We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives.”
~John F. Kennedy

  • Gratitude is the quality of being thankful.
  • Gratitude is the readiness to show appreciation.
  • Gratitude is to return kindness to others.Gratitude is more dependent on attitude than circumstance.
  • When you feel the lack of what you don’t have, be thankful for what you do have.

Grateful: A Love Song to the World – Musicians Patel and Nahmod brought dozens of people from around the world to create this song. They were inspired by the 21-Day Gratitude Challenge, and the song is a celebration of all that is a blessing in life. After 21 Days, people learn that “gratefulness” is a habit cultivated consciously and a muscle built over time. This music video, created within a week by a team of volunteers, displays all this is beautiful in our lives.

November marks Thanksgiving and this month’s superpower, gratitude. Gratitude is being aware of and being thankful for the good things that happen; taking time to express thanks.  Douglas Wood’s The Secret of Saying Thanks, is a reflective book on the importance of a grateful attitude and the heart that gives thanks is a happy one.  This have been proven through scientific experiments that you can try too!

Let’s try a little experiment:

  1. Watch the Science of Happiness: An Experiment in Gratitude.
  2. Stop at 1:11.
  3. On your green strip, write down an important person in your life.
  4. Turn your green strip over and write as much as you can on why this person is so important.
  5. Watch the video until 5:39.
  6. Let’s have a volunteer call this person.
  7. Watch the rest of the video.
  8. Take home your green strip tonight.  Contact this person and read him/her your thoughts.
  9. If you call this person, we’d like you to return the green strip to school and create a classroom gratitude chain.  The chains will be displayed in the main hallway.
  10. Expressing your gratitude will make you feel happier!

Our Superhero is here to remind us to be grateful for all that we have!

“I am grateful for today.  I am grateful for my country.  I am grateful for my family.  I am grateful for my school.”

Besides letting others know how grateful you are for them, another way you can show gratitude is by giving.  When it comes to being thankful for others, giving back to them is one of the best ways to show your gratitude. You can give them time, patience, love, kindness. You can also give them physical things too if you’re able — like donating the goods you no longer have use for to those in need.

We are kicking off the annual SAC Cottage Lane Food Drive. Did you know that 35,000 people in Rockland County don’t know where their next meal will come from? You can help end hunger in Rockland. Bring a food donation for local food pantries through November 13.  We are asking everyone to bring at least one food item that can be donated to our local food pantries that serve our own families as well. The following items are needed: canned fruits, peanut butter, jelly (in plastic), cereal, tuna, canned meat, rice, instant potatoes, pasta dishes, dried/canned beans.

After 14 months of traveling in 42 countries, it’s the story of a guy named Matt doing the gratitude dance with a cast of thousands around the globe … from the streets of Mumbai to a rock formation in Ireland to a tulip field in Netherlands!

The next time you’re tempted to complain,
do the Gratitude Dance–actually DO it!–and see what happens.
