At last night’s Board of Education meeting, Dr. Pritchard and Board members recognized Cottage Lane Elementary fifth-graders who participated in a school garden redesign project, one of several problem-based learning units students have engaged in this year. “During our IS periods, we challenged our students to re-design the garden here at Cottage Lane,” explained fifth-grade teacher Bill McAuliffe. “The students had three weeks to complete the project. They began by measuring the square footage of the current garden and each of its sections. Next, they researched fruits and vegetables that they would like to grow. Students even polled other classes to learn what their peers wanted in the garden. Each group created a detailed blueprint of their garden, listed the fruits and vegetables they selected, and explained why they chose certain foods.”
