Cottage Lane Elementary School

Today Cottage Lane celebrated Memorial Day with six gold star families.  Mrs. Maureen Kelly who is the driving force behind the Vetiquette program coordinated these efforts.  Vetiquette is a character education program that teaches children the importance of showing gratitude for our veterans and particularly for gold star families (families that have lost an immediate family member in service to our country). We welcomed:

  • Bob Allen (father of Lou Allen)
  • Lt. Col. Mark Smith (nephew of Tuskegee Airman Lt. James McCullen)
  • Joan Esposito (mother of Phillip Esposito)
  • Annie Murphy (mother of Michael Murphy)
  • Yolanda Lopez (mother of Manny Lopez)
  • Vicki and Gus Vahaviolos (parents of Steven Vahaviolos)

On behalf of Cottage Lane Staff and students, we presented three gifts to our golds star families. A poem written by Mrs. Fluger’s 4th grade class titled, “If we could give a gift to you!”  Ms. Murphy coordinated care packages for soldiers serving overseas in memory of the men and women honored here at Cottage Lane. Mrs. McBride created a special “My Three Words” video honoring the these heros. Classroom teachers prepared tribute quilts that are on display throughout our building. They were designed by the students on behalf of their heroes. We hope these quilts bring comfort to these families knowing that we are truly grateful and will not forget the sacrifices they have made.  Please go to our Vetiquette 2017 webpage to see more photos and watch the video.
