Response to Intervention (RTI)

Response to Intervention

The South Orangetown Central School District will identify students to receive Response to Intervention (RTI) services through a two-step process:

  • All students performing below the median scale score between a level 2/partially proficient and a Level 3/proficient on a grade 3-8 English language arts (ELA) or mathematics state assessment shall be considered for RTI.
  • Upon identification of a student for consideration for RTI, districts shall then use a district-developed procedure, to be applied uniformly at each grade level, for determining which students shall receive RTI. After the district considers a student’s scores on multiple measures of student performance, the district determines whether the student is required to receive RTI.

Students who score below the median scale score between Level 2 and Level 3 will be identified as eligible for RTI services. We will also take into account our students local STAR Renaissance Assessment scores in reading and math, common formative assessments in reading and math such as the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System that provide information about students’ independent reading level, unit and lesson assessments for ELA, mathematics, science, social studies and Languages Other than English (LOTE) for Grades 7-8, New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) where applicable, and teacher and parent recommendations in determining which students will receive RTI services.

Regardless of the multiple measures we use, they will be applied uniformly at each grade level and in each content area when determining which students will receive RTI. Students who meet the criteria to receive RTI will receive these services and progress monitoring in a variety of push-in and pull-out formats depending on student’s individual needs and schedules. Students receiving services will be re-evaluated every six to eight weeks to determine if the intervention program is working and to adjust the services as needed.

Parents of students who have been selected to receive RTI services will be notified by their service providers before services begin.
