Curriculum and Instruction

We began our meeting by reviewing the notes we collected when engaged in Instructional Rounds at the end of September. Ms. Bogart, Elementary Math Coach, and Ms. Premus, Secondary Math Coach, focused on grade-level readiness in accordance with the District’s SMART goal of College and Career Readiness. They facilitated the grouping of teacher leaders by grade or course to examine the state math standards and performance indicators. Teachers created t-charts comparing those standards or performance indicators that students should master. We also looked closely at which standards should be explored, but not necessarily mastered on each grade. From here, a K-12 perspective was formed and we were able to note that certain topics could have a large gap of time between when first taught and then revisited.  For example, students in grade four are first introduced to using a protractor and this standard is not revisited until 10th grade when students typically take Geometry. The team then did The gallery walk to review student work samples. A discussion ensued focused on SOCSD student performance. We talked about how students learn today and whether our current lessons and assessments may need to be adjusted to address today’s learner.
